What Is Character?
Who you are when no one is watching.
Reputation is built in public; character is forged in private. Be the same man when the only witness is you.
Reputation is the easy half — it's what people think they know about you, the mask you wear in the light. Character is the other thing entirely: who you are in the dark, when there's no one to perform for, no one to catch you, nothing to gain by doing right. It's the gap between what you could get away with and what you actually do.
And here's the catch — character isn't given, it's built, one small unseen choice at a time. The dollar you don't pocket. The lie you don't tell. The job you finish when quitting would cost you nothing. Stack enough of those private choices and you become a man who doesn't have to be watched to be trusted. That's the only wealth they can never take from you.
